How I Found My Love For Crochet

At the age of sixteen- seventeen, I was getting ready for a shower when I became aware that I could feel lumps in my breast tissue. I called my mom to the bathroom, and we set an appointment to see the doctor. Multiple ultrasounds and biopsies later we found I had rapidly growing Fibroadenomas. These are common non-cancerous breast tumors typically found in women through out their twenties & thirty’s.

I began to have frequent discomfort and when wearing different clothing items they were visible. I was now eighteen and it was causing insecurity and pain. With how large the growths had become my doctor agreed it was a good idea to get them removed. I had the surgrey and with that I was unable to lift more than 5 pounds for two weeks, I could not go up and down stairs, lay on my side etc.

So a day of Netflix went by and I was so bored! I had my mom run to the store to grab me a metal pack of crochet hooks and a ball of yarn. Youtube was now my best friend! I quickly learned the basics and by the end of the two weeks I had made my first sweater, and bandeau top!

Post surgery I kept learning and improving my skills! I am now twenty and it is the best outlet for me. It allows me to be creative, calm, and rewarded at the end! Crochet is something I love and while it took a not so great circumstance for me to find this passion, I now have a new skill and outlet! I believe that this just goes to show that a good thing can stem from any circumstance!
